You might come to this website knowing this already or perhaps this is the first time you are finding out. But there were thing's on this earth known as 'dogs' at one point. Not much remains of their collective memory, hell half the people I ask nowadays don't remember. They just look at me like I've lost my mind. More people believe in Goblins than dog's at this point.
I thought the old guy in the corner shop would know as he is like 84 years old. I said "Hey you must remember dogs right? I'm sure I read there were some around when you were a kid playing havoc on the broccoli farms in Yorkshire." and he looked at me like I had just said the earth was flat and asked me if I would be buying the same bottle of vodka I buy every day. I nodded a sad yes and walked out holding my shame.
But I remember. I remember the old books I would browse in the attic of my grandfathers house. All about dogs and how they used to be gay, vegan and free. The pages would almost crumble as you turned them, each chapter was a lengthy description of a different breed. There was so much variety! When Pokemon came out and I was like 'Hey its just like the dogs! remember those?' and everyone would just stare at me like I was insane.
Then the internet came about and I would google them all the time. But there were never any results, just fringe conspiracy websites talking about how the dogs went underground and that pigeons were spying on us. I mean, it's not out of the question that the pigeon population around my home is spying on me, I just don't think I would make very interesting viewing.
There was a time when I was young where I had hope that one day I would meet a dog. Maybe find some ancient dog eggs that had been left behind the woods, still viable. I could maybe bring them back and once the dog was old enough, it would share its knowledge with me. I would finally have the companionship I always dreamed of and gain its untold ancient wisdoms.
I went back to my grandfathers house last week. He was looking frail. I asked him about the dog books in the attic and he looked at me with suspicion.
"We don't talk about those... Not anymore... Not in this house. Not after what John Dogecore did to my wife." He said angrily, looking like he was about to cry.
Above the fireplace were all the pictures of him and his wife in their native Ireland. It was weird, in the pictures he looks so many different ages and she always looked the same. Every picture taken at night. What a strange couple they must have been. I went into the attic anyway and got the books and smuggled them home for further inspection. I noticed they were all written by a 'Zbigniew Dogecore', some polish fella I assume.
The opening page said "To my son John" and I felt like a child again flipping through the pages, admiring all the beautiful dogs. How could people forget? The book was very educational, explaining the complexities of their vegan diets, where they make their gay nests and how many eggs one can lay a year. It was absolutely fascinating to me. And that's why I'm writing this, to help you remember. To help you realize that if you can only open your mind to the beauty and magic of the world then maybe the dogs might come back. Dare to dream.
